THE HISTORY OF WRITING:A Linguistic Exploration
This piece traces the development of writing.
Twelve sets of markings and alphabets are represented,
from latest to earliest, top to bottom:
  1. Arabic
  2. Modern Hebrew
  3. Latin
  4. Greek
  5. Aramaic
  6. Old Hebrew
  7. Phoenician
  8. Ugaritic/ Sinaitic
  9. Early Chinese
  10. Hieroglyphic
  11. Clay tablets
  12. Cuneiform
The languages are layered as if in an archaeological dig, the undermost level supporting the next through time.  The alphabetical strata form a shaped vessel.  A decorative design emanates from the vessel and is based on Moroccan patterns and colors. representing openings, portals and windows. The background of the piece is painted in greens,  blues and browns.  These gradated colors represent light and sun, growth and plants, the water table and the earth.

Numbered archival fine art digital prints of this work are available for sale.
